In 1957, Louis Poulsen manufactured the Munkegaard light, designed by Arne Jacobsen. Its metal base with a brass trim and milk glass make it an integrated light. This recessed light is meant to be installed in the ceiling, with a brass ring encasing the visible milk glass part. The main fixture containing the bulb is situated inside the ceiling with an edge wrapping the ceiling hole. This creates a screen between the brass ring and opal glass, and the ceiling, giving the illusion of a floating disc. This space between the brass ring and the ceiling allows light to be directed outward, spreading onto the ceiling while the brass ring and milk glass soften the downward light. The Munkegård lamp was originally designed for the Munkegårdskolen (1957) public school's interior design in Gentofte, north of Copenhagen. Today, it is considered a design classic with Louis Poulsen's successful production.
