The early 'Egg' lounge chair designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen is a timeless masterpiece in the world of Danish design. Originally created for the SAS Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958, Jacobsen was given the challenge of not only designing the building but also the furnishings, including the 'Egg' chair inspired by Saarinen and the Eames. The design was achieved after molding the seat shell with chicken wire and plaster, resulting in a chair that forgoes the seat cushion found in later models. This particular chair boasts unique character with spots, scratches and traces indicative of its vintage status. As an architect turned furniture designer, Jacobsen aimed to create clean visual lines without sacrificing technical quality and ergonomic design. Although he favored cubist functionalism in his architecture, organic forms took precedence in his furniture designs. Nonetheless, all of Jacobsen's works shared a commonality of proportion, creating a piece that was both harmonious with the furniture and the space it occupied. This model was produced in 1966, as indicated by the manufacturer's label beneath the seat.
