The superbly minimalist Oxford chair boasts both elegance and comfort. Originally conceptualized for the dining halls of St. Catherine's College in Oxford, these chairs were specifically designed with the long tables in mind, where professors would dine and assert their authority over the students. In 1965, the chairs underwent upholstering and were officially introduced into production. The molded wood shell consists of seven layers of beech and two layers of poplar, complemented by polyurethane foam which is cloaked with fabric. Recent refurbishment included renewing the polyurethane foam which had deteriorated over time. The fabric was also carefully washed and mended in places where it had come into contact with the impressive super ellipse table, which is displayed in a separate post within our Gallery.
