The Wingback lounge chair, model 36/401, was created by Alvar Aalto in 1933. Produced by Artek (Finland) around 1950, the chair features a bent laminated birch base and armrests. The deep foam rubber seat and backrest are upholstered in fabric, and the chair is in excellent original condition. Literature references include Alvar Aalto: Designer, Lahti, pages 79 and 167, as well as Alvar & Aino Aalto Design: Collection Bischofberger, Kellein, page 118. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) was a renowned Finnish architect and designer. He was known for his work in architecture, furniture, textiles, and glassware. Aalto's approach was to create a complete work of art for each building, including furniture and light fixtures. In 1935, Aalto and his wife founded Artek to support the production and sales of Aalto furniture. Aalto's furniture designs blended practicality and aesthetics with the principle goal of enhancing everyday life.
