Born on February 3, 1898 in Kuortane, Finland, Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto earned his diploma in architecture from the Helsinki Institute of Technology in 1921. Due to post-war economic depression, he began working in Sweden before settling in Jyväskylä, where he opened his own architectural office in 1923. His wife Aino Marsio joined him there after their marriage in 1924. Recognized for his urban design skills, Aalto was commissioned to design Baker House, a student dormitory in 1947-1948 while teaching at MIT from 1946-1948. Following World War II, Finland experienced rapid urbanization and Aalto added city planning to his portfolio, resulting in the design of over 300 buildings and projects, including the civic center of Säynätsalo, National Pension Institute, and Jyväskylä teachers` college. Aalto also designed the iconic Hallway 403 chairs in molded Birch for the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland in 1932, featuring finger-jointing details in arms. These chairs age appropriately show signs of use.
