Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was born on February 3, 1898, in Kuortane, Finland, and graduated from the Helsinki Institute of Technology in 1921 with a degree in architecture. Due to limited opportunities in Finland, he initially worked in Sweden before establishing his own architectural studio in Jyväskylä with the addition of his wife Aino Marsio in 1924. In 1946-1948, Aalto taught at MIT where he designed the Baker House, a student dormitory situated along the Charles River. As one of his first endeavors in urban design and his most substantial project in over a decade, it was a significant undertaking for the Finnish Modernist master. The six-section fan leg is a distinguishing factor of the "Fan Leg" table, skillfully crafted by Alvar Aalto and an iconic representation of Finnish Modernism. Made of Birch, its dimensions are 35 1/2" (width) x 35 1/2" (depth) x 22 1/2" (height).
