Nike's initial use of jacquard material for a shoe's upper was seen in the London Underground x Nike Air Max 90 "Roundel" release back in December 2013. Initially sold exclusively at a pop-up shop in Piccadilly Circus, the Roundel AM90 later became available at select Nike Sportswear tier-zero retailers. The London Underground Air Max 90 paid homage to London's train cars by making use of the tightly woven jacquard material to create a single-piece woven upper. This material transitioned from blocks of tan to red, brown, and black, representing the transport's seats. In a unique twist, all traditional AM90 overlays were replaced by one single piece of jacquard material, including the Nike Swoosh. The Roundel AM90 used color-blocking changes to the pattern to mimic the traditional Air Max 90 overlays. The tongue featured the Roundel branding, and the AM90 Roundel was packaged in special London Underground and NSW branded packaging. Retailing at £100, the Roundel Air Max Ninety was slightly more expensive than its package-partner, the Air Max 1. The London Underground x Nike Air Max 90 "Roundel" celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the Transport for London (TFL), using classic TFL colors with innovative technologies and graphics on its single-piece jacquard upper, providing sneaker enthusiasts with a glimpse into the past and present.
