If there was ever an Air Jordan 3 colorway that appeared destined for UNC Tarheels basketball players, it would be the "Powder Blue" edition. In the early days of Air Jordans' popularity, Michael Jordan's alma mater frequently became the inspiration for color schemes. Both the original Jordan 9 and Jordan 10 were developed in "Powder Blue" variations, eventually worn by players on the Tarheels team. Two decades later, the Air Jordan 3 Retro is unveiled with a "Dark Powder Blue" upper, reminiscent of UNC. The Powder Blue Jordan 3 Retro's uniqueness comes from the way Elephant Print was used. The traditional placement of the toe wrap and heel wrap features the light blue with black print, but the inner lining's Wolf Grey color also contains a delicate Elephant Print design on the Powder Blue Retro 3s. The official colorway for the "Powder Blues" is Dark Powder Blue/Black-Wolf Grey-White, and despite it not being an original colorway, the exclusive details and North Carolina-inspired color scheme make the Powder Blue AJ3 one of the most awaited releases of that year when it was launched in January 2014. In subsequent restocks of the Jordan 3 Retro "Powder Blue" colorway, GLINT was the platform of choice, and the shoe continued to sell out with each successive release.
