The "Soriana" sofa, designed by Tobia and Afra Scarpa for Cassina in Italy in 1969, became extremely popular in the following decade. This inviting two-seater is characterized by its low profile and sumptuous curves, but its most notable feature is the minimalist structure in chromed steel. The steel rod exterior keeps the cover tight using buttons at the seat, causing it to curl at the points where it folds to descend along the sides and back. The metal parts embrace the seat and hold the polyurethane filter like a vice, creating a T-shape. The "Soriana" received a Compasso d'Oro prize in 1970. Afra Bianchin (1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (1935), who began their long collaboration in 1957, collaborated with companies such as Gavina, B&B Italia, and Cassina starting in 1960. They were innovative and unconventional thinkers, creating numerous projects that explored new ways of combining different materials and shapes. Their works are exhibited in museums all over the world, including the MoMa in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Our atelier meticulously restored and reupholstered this stunning sofa in ivory wool bouclé, maintaining its original signs of use and time. However, we can reupholster it in any material you desire, and our atelier would be delighted to customize the finishing of your piece to your specifications.
