The pendant light known as "Nigritella" was created by the talented design duo Afra & Tobia Scarpa in the 1960s. The half-spherical shape is made of red lacquer metal and was manufactured by Flos in Italy. This piece has been featured in publications such as Domus, Ottagono, and Repertorio del design italiano per l'arredamento domestico. Afra Bianchin and Tobia Scarpa were both renowned designers, and together they created many successful furnishings. Tobia's upbringing, in particular, was influenced by his father Carlo Scarpa, who was an accomplished architect. After graduating from the Universita Iuav di Venezia in 1957, they launched their own design office in Montebelluna. The Bastiano sofa, which they designed for Dino Gavina, was one of their first popular creations. They went on to collaborate with other prestigious companies such as B&B Italia and Cassina. Their Soriana sofa even earned them the Compasso d'Oro award in 1970. Despite their devotion to modernism, they also emphasized comfort and aesthetics, frequently exploring novel materials and production techniques. They were among the first to recognize the potential of polyurethane, using it as a structural element in the Ciprea armchair, which was produced by Cassina in 1968. In addition to furniture design, the Scarpa duo was involved in a wide range of architectural projects, notably working for Benetton in the construction of offices, factories, and shops. They also revived historical buildings, including the Palazzo della Ragione in Verona. Their Maxalto line, which specialized in making highly crafted, small-scale pieces, was highly acclaimed during the 1970s, with the Artona series becoming a design icon.
