This set of eight "Monk" dining chairs by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Molteni is a striking example of their innovative approach to design. The unique feature of these chairs is the solid wood trestle support structure that is seamlessly attached to shaped metal tubing, creating a cohesive seat and back design. The trestles are joined by bolts and adorned with burnished steel hubs, which add a beautiful decorative touch. The seat surface is made from two leather parts that are shaped for comfortable seating, and there are two different covering options available. Additionally, the trestles may be made with composite parts that alternate two external layers in wood with a dark inner part, which was a design motif that Scarpa and Bianchin would explore further in their "Artona" series. Afra Bianchin and Tobia Scarpa were a dynamic creative duo that began their collaborative work in 1957. They went on to work with major companies such as B&B Italia, Cassina, and Gavina, bringing an unconventional and inventive approach to each of their designs. Today, their pieces are featured in museums around the globe, including the famed MoMA in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Our atelier meticulously restored these chairs, which bear only slight signs of use and the passage of time, adding to their charm and character.
