The elegant coffee table designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto is from the renowned "Artona" collection, which was a high-end line produced by the specialist division of B&B Italia. Featuring a support structure made up of slender cylindrical columns of contrasting types of wood that are positioned in a square grid and connected to the base with a plate containing drilled holes for insertion, this table is a work of art. The attachment to the top allows each solid wood piece's end to protrude from the surface, creating circular imprints in different tones that enhance the design's fantastical nature. Afra Bianchin (1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (1935) began their creative partnership in 1957 and collaborated with leading companies such as Gavina, B&B Italia, and Cassina starting in 1960. They were innovative and unconventional thinkers who revolutionized the design industry by experimenting with various materials and shapes. Their designs are showcased worldwide in top museums such as the MoMa in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Our atelier meticulously restored this superb coffee table, which bears slight telltale signs of use that add to its exquisite charm.
