From 1963 to 1966, Cassina collaborated with architects Afra and Tobia Scarpa to create a series of furniture that featured solid wood, expertly crafted joints, and screw assembly. One of their most beloved designs is the 121 chair, which was created in 1965 and remains highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts. The chair was produced in various materials and finishes, but the current iterations have a frame made of ashwood and a seat and back made of black lacquered plywood. Afra and Tobia Scarpa began their careers together in 1959 with the creation of the Pigreco chair at Franco Albini's decorating course. They graduated from IUAV in Venice in 1969 and went on to work on numerous notable projects, particularly in the realm of furniture design. The Scarpa's designs are known for their elegant and refined forms, as well as their careful consideration of materials. They were not swayed by fleeting trends or fads, but rather sought to create long-lasting, well-crafted products. The Scarpa's contributions extend beyond furniture design, as they played a key role in organizing and representing the enterprises of Veneto and Lombardy. They were honored with the 1970 Compasso d'Oro award and collaborated with Benetton on several projects, including the knitwear factory in Paderno and the plants in Castrette di VIllorba. They also worked on numerous restoration projects in the region and sought to bridge the gap between innovative solutions and traditional building techniques.
