A pair of Afra & Tobia Scarpa designed armchairs for Cassina in the year 1963, finished in red leather and walnut wood. The construction of these armchairs consists of solid wood with a slender rectangular shape. The vertical supports are composed of straightforward planks, and the cover stretched between the armrest's two crossbars reveals their organization. The wire weave interconnecting the arms holds the cushion on the structure to serve as a seat, which renders it elastic. A slight padding emphasizes the ergonomic elements in contrast to the cushion's dense upholstery. Designed even before the famed "Soriana" living room and "Africa" chairs, this armchair clearly embodies Scarpa's innovative style, which offers distinct solutions for each functional element leading to a unique interpretation of the object. Afra Bianchin (1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (1935) began their collaboration in 1957 worldwide. They worked with companies like Gavina, B&B Italia, and Cassina, displaying an innovative and unconventional approach in their designs. The duo mastered the use of mixed materials and shapes, leading them to develop several projects in the field. The chair set has slight signs of usage, and our atelier has carefully restored and reupholstered the pieces with high-quality red leather. If interested in a larger set, a set of four chairs is available and can be provided upon request.
